Plays: 8322 Jiggs: 19 Description: In 17th and 18th century Europe, the chaconne was a popular dance form which used a repeating bass part to accompany colourful variations. I decided to use this form because of its intrinsic balance of continuity and discontinuity, the repetitions of the bass providing the certainty of fulfilled expectations, and the variations contributing surprise. My chaconne uses a bass part of four notes which provide the vehicle for a gradually evolving progression of contrapuntal textures within a steady tempo. The tempo is interrupted in the middle of the work for a brief gamelan-like section built on the four greatly lengthened bass notes. Throughout the work there are several layers of time cycles operating, from the immediate repetitions of the ground bass to much longer repetitions.
The work reflects my concern to create music which seeks to attain an abstract beauty before any other consideration. My goal is to make structures in sound in which I (and I hope others) can delight, structures which derive their beauty from intricate relationships of patterns within the reference frame of non-nostalgic tonality.
